Joseph the Spouse “Messiah Moon” Official Music Video
I have always been a huge fan of Chris Sullivan not just as an amazing actor, but as a musician, which is where I believe he truly lets the world see the depth of his soul, creating impossibly dolcet arrangements with his immensely powerful voice. Creating a music video for his latest album was a true pleasure for me and working with such an amazing song as “Messiah Moon”, which is based of an epic poem by Alex Harvey, left a world of opportunity at my feet.
As COVID was still raging, the creative had to be contained to something I could produce mainly by myself and only relying on a few of the most talented people to bring something visually valuable to the richness of this song. I opted to shoot actors and performers independently on a large green screen for safety, and then was able to craft the story in post, using a variety of experimental tools (such as Lockdown) in After Effects. A combination of practical effects like face projections were folded into the VFXs, to create a highly stylized mythic journey to hopefully match the powerful tone of the song.
This last year has been indeliable for everyone and this song to me voiced a lot of the uncertainty we’ve all felt, and the burgeoning hope we are all now experiencing. By no coincidence Pantone released two opposing pigments for their color of the year; Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow. Their reasoning was that they were "two independent colors that highlight how different elements come together to support one another”. The dichotomy of the song, of finding hope through the darkness, seemed like a nice match to use these two shades as the principle color palette of the video, since like the NYT writes we are all looking for a “a brighter future”.
